Increasing milk consumption in cystic fibrosis by use of a wonder drink competition

Abstract Milk has been identified as the single most useful food for achieving the higher energy intake demanded to meet the increased energy requirements associated with cystic fibrosis (CF). Increased consumption of whole milk has been associated with higher fat and energy intakes in CF. The purpose of this study was to see if a novel strategy could enhance self-selected milk intake. A milkshake recipe competition, the wonder drink competition (WDC), was devised and implemented with both process and impact evaluation being completed for 29 subjects. Sixty-eight per cent of eligible subjects registered for the competition and 30 recipes were entered. While 30% of the subjects reported to have increased their milk consumption as a result of the WDC, 62% of the dietary assessment questionnaires showed an actual increase in milk consumption. For the juniors this was a significant increase of 205mL per day (P<0.036). The WDC was a successful, indirect method of increasing self-reported milk consumption in children aged five to 14 years to clinically important levels. (Aust J Nutr Diet 1997;54:145–147).
