The Food Cent$ project: a practical application of behaviour change theory

Ruth Margaret Foley

Abstract The Food Cent$ project addresses the issue of the increased risk of nutrition-related diseases when people have less money available to buy food. It enables those with a limited food budget to allocate their money to groups of food which make up a healthy diet. It was planned using the PRECEDE problem diagnosis model. Strategies were developed by applying relevant theories of behaviour change. The project was implemented at a statewide level using a small grants approach. The Food Cent$ project focuses on value for money, an important issue for the target group, and provides resources and practical opportunities to develop budgeting, cooking and shopping skills. It uses trained community volunteers to conduct budget and cooking sessions. Project concepts and resources can engage dietitians and nutritionists in creative nutrition education activities with their clients, health professionals and with other organisations.
